There is something quietly revealing about the way a person eats an apple. Not just the variety they choose, or whether they peel it first, but how far they go. Do they stop at the first sign of core? Do they eat right through? The apple core is the great dividing line of snack behaviour, and nobody talks about it enough.
You can tell a lot about a person by how they eat an apple. Well, maybe that is a load of crap. Actually, I don’t know it could be true. How about we make an assumption that it is. Gadzooks!!!
So in the picture below we see what some people leave behind, and then they throw it into the rubbish and not into the garden. If you are a ‘not hungry’ apple eater, at least throw it into the garden or compost it rather than sending it to landfill.
Ok now it’s getting closer to the core.
This is more like it, now at ‘half core’. If you take a bite of the flesh some core it all tastes a little like an almond cake. That could be that inert form of cyanide, but it’s all good.
Now we have the thin red line. The core is gone, and we are left with a thick, wooden, fibrous stem. Are you up for it?
Now this is ‘Hard Core’
Now go eat an apple. Let me know where you stop, if you can!!
Whatever your stopping point, do the right thing with what’s left. The apple core breaks down quickly in a garden bed or compost heap, and even has a second life in the kitchen. If you’ve got a glut of apples going soft, check out this homegrown apple compote recipe as a way to use every last bit before anything ends up in the bin. Nothing hardcore about wasting good fruit.
