Coffee Grounds Make an Excellent Exfoliant!

Did you know that our largest organ is our Skin!

It is worth protecting, improving, softening, and cleaning with the best products available.

The best products available do not always mean the most pricey at the spa or at the cosmetics and skin care counter in a department store.

Sometimes the best products around come right from out kitchens.

English: Skin layers

Skin is delicate; it breathes; and is porous.

Just like we would not use harsh chemicals or heavy material on a delicate wooden table top for fear of scratching or damaging, we especially have to be careful with a living organ.

What’s in an Exfoliant?

Some of the store bought exfoliant actually contain bits of stone or plastic granules. They may also contain either peppermint oil or alcohol, which are both drying to the skin.

Granted, the premise behind what an exfoliant does is based on a slight abrasive material that, when rubbed in a circular motion on our skin, digs down under the skin to unclog pores and slough away dead dry skin cells, but it does not have to be harsh.

Used coffee grounds are a perfect ingredient for a home-made exfoliant. The reason for this is because they are slightly abrasive, hold their shape even in water, and take some time to dissolve. And let’s forget that you can collect as much as you want for free!

Our pores are the “exits” for oils in the body and can easily get clogged and then blocked up.

Exfoliating the skin several times a week, followed by applying lotion will help skin stay clear and fresh looking. It also helps people with acne, fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation problems.

Recipes to make your own Exfoliant

Here are two recipes for a homemade coffee grounds exfoliant, with just a slight variation in ingredients. Choose the one that suits you best.

Recipe 1

  • 2 cups used ground coffee
  • ½ cup sea salt
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of a good massage oil

This version is recommended to be used either morning or night after a hot bath or shower, then rinsed, patted dry for an application of lotion. It is a product of nature that revitalizes and rejuvenates skin.

Recipe 2

  • ¼ cup used ground coffee
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp honey

This recipe is intended to be mixed in a jar that can be in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Best to use in the shower.

Bonus: you can add shredded coconut and substitute the olive oil for either almond oil or macadamia nut oil also.

Treatment for Cellulite?

The natural caffeine in the coffee, which is a mild diuretic, will aid in the skin treatment by stimulating the water within our body.

This, will give a firmer appearance, and a more toned look. You may have even come across information about coffee grounds being a useful treatment for cellulite for this very reason!
