Environmental problems are rampant worldwide, everywhere you look there are terrible atrocities happening to our natural world, it can all just seem completely out of our control.

But surprisingly, there is something you can do in your own back yard!

You can improve your personal health and the health of the environment by taking up organic gardening.

Just a few hours a week spent outdoors growing your own organic crops will help improve your own fitness level and sense of well-being. All the while making your yard a clean, green oasis where you can enjoy time in nature, spent with family and friends.

Your efforts will green your world and set a great example for others that will take us all one step closer to the “tipping point” – the time when the vast majority of people suddenly realize that green is the right way to go!

It will keep you healthy as well as the planet

When you eat food that you’ve grown, not only do you feel absolutely wonderfully proud and happy with yourself, but you avoid the negative effects many environmental problems have directly on you!

When you grow your own organic produce, you avoid the chemicals and genetically modified organisms that are completely unavoidable in the supermarket produce aisles.

The produce you and your family consume will be fresher and far more nutritious than anything you could purchase at the supermarket and far, far cheaper.

Your glowing good health may very well save you also from contamination by pharmaceutical medications!

Build a natural oasis right at your back door

Gardening gives you control of the way you care for your little piece of earth and the food you eat.

Using organic fertilizers, such as household compost, is a safe, effective, and inexpensive way of improving your garden soil and keeping excess waste out of the landfill and dangerous chemicals out of the water table.

Gardening without synthetic chemical additives saves you money and improves the long-term quality of the soil.

A side benefit is that when you use organic materials to improve soil conditions, you are also addressing the environmental problem of loss wildlife habitat. As time passes, you will gradually see the return of garden fauna such as toads and turtles who will help you keep pests at bay while enjoying the nice habitat you provide!

Build bio-diversity in your area

In fact, keeping an organic garden plot is a great way to address the environmental problems presented by lack of bio-diversity and ecosystem stability.

By nurturing an all natural organic garden plot in your yard, you create habitat for a wide variety of beneficial insects and birds.

Pests thrive in poor soil because the checks and balances provided by nature are disrupted. Crops’ defences are weakened by chemically treated soils and natural predators cannot survive to combat the pests.

By restoring balance, you encourage a dazzling array of interesting, beneficial life forms. For example, you will be amazed to see the variety and numbers of butterflies that will mass in your yard with just a few organic flowers and fruit bearing trees in evidence.

Bring your soils back to life

A well-cared-for organic garden attracts a beneficial mix of all kinds of wildlife to help with your hobby and enrich your enjoyment of your yard.

Worms are a great example. If you take steps to improve your soil organically, worms will notice and turn up in great thundering herds! They will come to your plot and help your crops by aerating the soil, breaking down matter into nutrients plants can use, and fertilizing the soil with their castings (worm poop).

They will also get to work on your compost heaps and turn them into rich, usable soil quickly and efficiently. When you put time into enhancing the health of your yard, nature takes notice and lends a helping hand!

Get out there!

So come on organic gardening really has no negatives at all, you feel good, the world and nature around you feels good and you are contributing meaningfully to the future of your family and the planet.

Sarah just loves organic gardening, it is her way of contributing positively to the environmental problems on the planet.

  2. It is said that egg shells will do very little good in the garden, because it takes so long for them to break down. I say organic gardening & composting helps everyone, egg shells in the garden is better then egg shells in the land filled.
